Rick Vaughn's troubles in the movie come from the fact that the previous season's success went to his head. Perhaps that's what we're seeing with the whole Rays team--inflated ego, over-estimation of abilities, and general lack of focus. Also, of course, Major League 2 ends after a 7-game ALCS. The team makes it to the World Series, but the movie ends before the series starts.
