Rays Exercise CC's Option

Not a huge surprise, but the Rays have exercised their option on CC and his $10M salary for the 2010 season.

CC has been the heart of the young organization; owning the franchise marks in hits, AB's, SB's, runs, RBI, and triples, and of course games played.

Much speculation has been made as to whether or not the Rays will still try ot move him during the offseason or at some point during the first half of next season (depending greatly on whether or not the Rays are in contention in 2010).

Other roster moves included declining the options of catcher Gregg Zaun and reliever Brian Shouse, neither of which came as a surprise, although many (myself included) would like to see the Rays bring Zaun back with a lower salary. The organization also pick-up Ramon Ramirez off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds

Michel Hernandez gets DFA'd

Wow.
That's all I can come up with. The Rays recently signed veteran back-up catcher Gregg Zaun, so we knew a change was imminent, but I did not see this as the potential change.

Hernandez has had a very good season in terms of what he's done beside and behind the plate, and seemed to be quite good in the back-up catcher role (242, 292, 323 in 35 games).

My first guess when I heard of the Zaun signing was that perhaps Riggans would be sent back to his favorite place on earth, the DL, to make room for Zaun, my second guess was... well I didn't have a second guess, but I can assure you that it wouldn't have been Hernandez to be DFA'd.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the Rays know something I don't know because I can't seem to make heads or tails out of this decision.

It is what it is, and time will tell.

Catching Depth

Our friends over at Rays Index in conjunction with several other sources are reporting that the Rays have acquired Gregg Zaun from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for a player to be named later and a bag of used BP balls (okay- just the PTBNL).


Zaun's stat line is as follows:
.244/.355/.375 in a total of 56 games.

He has thrown out 10 of 39 base-stealers.
