BJ Down-ton

BJ Upton has had a down season.
BJ Upton is just as disappointed in himself as we are in him.
BJ Upton is still the real deal.

That being said, at what point does his liability at the plate (and on the basepaths) supersede his ability in the outfield?

Is it time for BJ to take a seat for a few games, again? would it benefit the team to plug in someone else who could be a potential sparkplug much as Zaun has been from the catcher position?

I'm gonna go ahead and comment on both of the last two posts at once, if that's alright.

First off, I think that there's a certain amount of sense in the suggestion to move Price to the 'pen. I'd be worried, however, that doing so means (1) leaving Sonnanstine in the rotation, which sounds like a pretty dismal option to me, and/or (2) finding someone else to start. Not sure who that'd be. Couldn't a six-man rotation suffice to limit Price's innings?

As for Upton, who would you want to see start in his stead? Maybe put Zobrist in center and keep the Gabe platoon out in right? I'm not sure that either of them are sure bets to perform better than BJ on a game-to-game basis (though both Gabes do have better lines on the year). I dunno. I'm feeling about Upton the way I'm feeling about this team in general right now. Every once in a while, there's enough of a flash of the old magic that I keep thinking things are about to turn around. All that's a long way of saying this: if sitting down for a few games kick-starts Upton and/or the team, then I'm for it.

Sadly, Sonny's here either way...i wouldn't mind seeing him coming out of the 'pen either though.

The Price scenario solves itself as soon as the Rays are officially out of it- I was just trying to maintain an optimistic outlook.

I don't know what my feelings about who I'd stick in CF would be if Upton were to be sat down... maybe Zobrist, Kapler, (Perez is a long shot)... I'm at a loss- I just know I'd like to see something change (either he heats back up or takes a mini-vacation).
Joyce can be called-up to add outfield depth at any minute...

True enough, particularly given tonight's result, which has to end the Rays' chances on the season. I was (maybe optimistically) forgetting about Joyce and Perez (well, I wasn't forgetting about Perez so much as thinking about him as a pinch runner and spot-fielder). Anyhow, it'll be interesting to see how they do now that they'll be (presumably) getting playing time in September. Sigh.

The ankle injury may have solved the problem for us...

Be prepared for the Durham squad to start flocking-in at lightning speed as of the next loss or two...

It'd be nice to see them find a way to get Jennings up for a few weeks...
